Obituary of James Dineen

James “Jimmy” Dineen passed away on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, New York. He was 88 years old. Jimmy resided in Yonkers, New York with his wife of 58 years Kathleen Dineen nee Barry from County Cork, Ireland. Jimmy and Kathleen are the proud parents of 5 children: Margaret O’Connor (Brookfield, CT), James (Monroe, NY), Christopher (Bronxville, NY), John (Woodlawn, NY) and Patricia Schwander (Yonkers, NY). Jimmy was born in 1932 in the Village of Ballyhaise, County Cavan, Ireland. He is the son of Thomas Dineen and Mary Dineen nee Reilly. They were the proud parents of 11 children: Margaret, Kathleen Lynch, John, Mary McCann, Jimmy, Tessie McGuiness, Nancy O’Connor, Rose Gimeli, Thomas, Patrick and Frank. Jimmy attended the National School and Technical School in Cavan. He then worked for Smith and O’Reilly Contractors. In 1955, Jimmy emigrated to the United States sponsored by his loving sister Kathleen. He went to work for Trans World Airlines (TWA) in the cargo and logistics center at LaGuardia Airport and then at JFK Airport. He worked the next 40 years for TWA until his retirement in 1995. As an airline employee Jimmy was able to travel frequently to his hometown of Ballyhaise to visit family and friends. Known amongst his friends as the “Quiet Man”, Jimmy was a proud member of the Cavan P&B Association in New York. In 1993, he was honored with the “Cavan Man of the Year” award. Jimmy enjoyed spending time off with his family and friends. He loved Gaelic Football and Hurley and attended events at Gaelic Park in the Bronx and Flushing Meadows in Queens. He was a member of the Gaelic Athletic Association sponsored by TWA where many of his friends also worked. Jimmy was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Queens and St. Barnabas Parish in Woodlawn. Jimmy is survived by his wife Kathleen, children Margaret, James, Christopher, John and Patricia; sisters Mary McCann (Cavan, Ireland), Tessie McGuiness (Spring Lake, NJ), Nancy O’Connor (London, UK); brother Patrick (London, UK) and 7 grandchildren. He is predeceased by sisters Margaret, Rose, Kathleen; brothers Thomas, Frank, John. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at Hodder Farenga Funeral Home, 899 McClean Avenue, Yonkers, New York. The family requests donations, in lieu of sending flowers, be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation (alzinfo.org). With everyone’s health and NY regulations in mind, the number of visitors must be monitored. Mourners will be asked to be patient and must prepare to wait outside the building. Visitors will be cycled through while practicing social distancing so that all may have the chance to pay their respects. Please remember, the sick, elderly and those with compromised health, should avoid public settings Viewing will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M.
